Highways

Stalin is responsible for much of the modern day surface transportation system; the network of highways.  In 1961 he ordered the construction of the MKAD: the Moskovskaya Koltsevaya Automobilnaya Doroga or Moscow Automobile Ring Road which surrunded the city outskirts at that time. This is shown in Purple on the map.  Additional major highways were cut through the city, shown in Red, and existing major streets were widened, shown in Green. Stalin was not concered about historic architecture that was in the paths of these highways.  Several historic buildings, including the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, were demolished. Cathedral of Christ the Saviour was actually later reconstructed in teh 1990s and is currently the largest Orthadox church in the world.
