Architecture 497 Projects

Architecture 497 is the studio I took while in Paris and Rome focusing on local sites

Architecture 497 - Independent Study on the Paris Metro

Metro

The study abroad program included a 3-credit independent study project of our choosing. The topic was very open-ended, but when I experienced the Paris Metro I knew that I wanted to write about the topic. I did a lot of research on foot myself and did the print research when I got back to the states.

Arch 497 Project 1 - Stairway to Isola Tiberna

Project 1

For the first project while living in Rome, Italy, we selected a piece of the city of Rome to place a "small architectural intervention" of less than 1000 cubic feet. This project was not to be anything specific, like a snack bar, but it could potentially support those uses. Consideration of materials, experience, weathering and time was a focus of the project.

Arch 497 Project 2 - Mobile Infodesk and Display Booth

Project 2

The program for the second project in Rome called for a small mobile information and display booth to be placed in any of the many piazzas in the city. The requirements were that it could be moved easily since trucks are an impossibility in much of the city, it should be able to adapt to its environment and have a light impact on the ground.

Arch 497 Project 3 - Redesign of Musée de Arts et Méiters

Project 3

The final project of the study abroad semester was to re-design the Musée de Arts et Méiters. It is currently in an older, small building and the program called for an update of facilities, as well as the addition of offices and a cafe which is missing from the current museum. Because of the proximity of the site to the Line 5, I added a part of the museum that included information on the history of the Paris Métro. Currently the museum has a small exhibit on the new Line 14's automation system, but little else. The new exhibit would give a virtual reality tour, history, an interactive map with live data from the system, as well as a live look into Line 5 by though a window. Because of its proximity to the subway, the whole exhibit will shake when the trains rumble by.
