Architecture 420 Projects
Architecture 420 is the second junior-level studio that focused on site and building connections
Arch 420 Project 1 - City of Milwaukee Boathouse
The project entailed creating a boat house to hold various sized canoes, kayaks and rowboats to be used on the river immediately in front of Cesar Park. The site had to be accessible for people with handicaps and had to serve as a catalyst to bring people to the site. The buildable location was along the river, but not far back because the steep embankment left only about a 75 foot wide swath of land.
Arch 420 Project 2 - Equinox Skinboat School
The second Architecture 420 project related to the first in that it dealt with boats, though this was a building designed for the creation of hand-built 'skin boats' and doubled as a house for the owner/manager of the school. There were specific requirements for the space by the number of large wood-working tools would be used, the storage and the number of boats that would be built simultaneously. Also, another important consideration was that they required a steam box to heat up the wood for bending, but this had to be located as close to the place the boat was being assembled as possible.
Arch 420 Project 3 - Shorewood Community Center
The final project for Architecture 420 was to design a community learning center for the village of Shorewood, a suburb of Milwaukee. The center combined 3 studio spaces, a lecture hall, a gallery, yoga and meditation space and an amphitheater. The site contains a park with some benches and paths and has a very steep slope up to the railroad bed. There is a tunnel connecting the two sides of the hill for the roadway, and a smaller tunnel to connect a parking lot on the other side to the park.
